The Vineyard

Introduced by the Romans almost 2000 years ago, the vine has enjoyed a chequered history in Britain. According to the Domesday Book of 1086, there were nearly 50 vineyards in southern England, however, following Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries in 1536, English vineyards passed into less than enthusiastic ownership and, coupled with the strong growth in French imported wines, wine-growing in this country declined in acreage and importance.

Overlooking the beautiful Surrey countryside, Godstone Vineyards was established in 1985. An initial 6.5 acres were planted after consultations on the correct varieties to plant and methods of trellising that would suit our gently sloping, south-facing site.

The most northern field of the vineyard is known as 'Hop Garden' and hops were grown on the site until quite recently. The whole area is steeped in local history; indeed, under the vineyard there are still many caves and tunnels which run from Godstone to Reigate and were originally used in mining hearthstone. One of the entrances adjoins 'Hop Garden' although more recently the caves were used during World War Two as a bonded liquor store!

Set in fifty acres of glorious farmland on the very edge of the Weald, Godstone Vineyards is a delightful venue for individual visitors, groups, meetings, morning coffee, lunches and afternoon teas.

Peter and June Deeley, their family, and all their staff at Godstone Vineyards, look forward to providing a warm welcome to you, your family and friends, whenever you choose to visit one of Surrey's leading vineyards.
